Why Your Referrals Have Dried Up (And How to Get Them Flowing Again)

Ready to become the go-to expert in your space? It starts with one simple shift.

If you’re like I was or like any of my clients, I’ll bet you’ve spent thousands on courses, agencies, and group programs trying to “fix” your marketing.

You’ve spent years (or decades) doing solid work but always behind the scenes. So, when your business isn’t as successful as it could (or should) be, you assume it’s a visibility problem.

So you invest in:

  • LinkedIn content programs (hell, I used to teach one!)

  • Lead generation agencies

  • Copywriting courses

  • Fancy email funnels

  • Paid ads (big yikes)

And what happens?

Nothing changes.

No flood of dream clients. No high-ticket inbound leads. No consistent revenue.

Just a lot of wasted time, money, and heartache.

  • And the growing feeling that maybe something is wrong with you.

  • That maybe you’re not cut out for this.

  • That maybe you should just quit.

But here’s the truth:

Your problem isn’t marketing. It’s clarity.

Because when you aren’t crystal clear on what you do, for whom, and why it matters, neither is your audience.

And if they don’t get it?

They sure as hell won’t hire you.

The 6-Figure Shift (Without Fancy Marketing)

Over the last few months, I’ve been working with an HR consultant, whom I’ll call Pam. (not her name, btw. She and I haven’t done an official case study, yet, so don’t want to reveal the details until she gives me the go-ahead)

Pam is insanely good at what she does. She has decades of experience, great results, and a solid network. But she was stuck in the referral rollercoaster.

Some months were amazing. Others were…stress-inducing.

We actually first started working together when I was still teaching personal branding cohorts. She thought that would be the answer to drumming up more clients, consistently.

She was tired of that nagging feeling that she should be further along. She knew she should be making more money, doing more satisfying work, and feeling like the empowered, badass consultant that she is.

But instead, she was wondering why things weren’t clicking for her and what she needed to do to turn the tide.

So, we started working 1:1 together, and I quickly saw the problem.

Her messaging was muddy.

When someone asked, “What do you do?” she gave a long, meandering answer that even she wasn’t sure about.

And when your positioning isn’t clear, something terrifying happens:

People stop referring you.

Because even when people like you, respect you, and want to help you

They don’t know exactly who to send your way.

And worse, you start to lose your confidence in what you do, so you don’t want to talk about it either.

Clarity → Confidence → Clients

So with Pam, we didn’t touch her marketing.

We worked on three things:

  1. Nailing her "One Thing.” Getting laser-focused on the core outcome she helps clients achieve

  2. Crafting a laser-sharp offer. So she could confidently communicate her expertise and the outcome she delivered in a way that made people immediately interested

  3. Positioning herself as the obvious (and differentiated) choice. So her network KNEW exactly who to send her way.

Within about a month, she turned a new contact into a strategic partner. He works with a private equity firm, and saw the opportunity for her to do some due diligence grunt work.

But since she now had clarity on the true outcome she could provide for clients and the unique way she did it, she pushed back. Yes, she’d do the due diligence, but explained why they actually needed more than that. She described her new offer and the outcome it delivered, positioning it as the logical choice, given their goals.

His eyes went wide with surprise. He realized she was right. Her approach would be more valuable to his firm (and the companies within it).

She just inked a deal for her to work with their entire portfolio of companies. This will likely lead to multiple 6-figures in revenue.

And the best part is how this clarity has transformed her as a person and a CEO.

She’s gone from knowing she’s good at what she does but feeling insecure about how to convey it to feeling so confident in herself, her skills, and her business that she is jumping at the chance to talk about it.

  • Getting on sales calls (which she used to hate)

  • Conducting strategic networking

  • Landing podcast interviews

Her business didn’t change.

Her network didn’t change.

Her authority didn’t change.

The only thing that changed?

She got clear. And that clarity helped HER change.

I say it often: Clarity breeds confidence. So if you’re not feeling confident in your work, I’ll bet money it’s because you’re not clear on what that work actually is, who it’s for, and why it matters.

The Hard Truth About Referrals

I love referrals. I think referrals are one of the most powerful ways to grow a business.

But most coaches and consultants never take a step back and ask themselves:

  • What exactly am I being referred for?

  • Can people in my network easily describe what I do?

  • Am I making it stupidly simple for them to send me the right clients?

If the answer is no, your referral pipeline is weak—not because people don’t respect you, but because they don’t know how to talk about you.

The easier you make it for people to refer you, the more they will.

So, What Do You Actually Need to Do?

If you’ve been stuck in the marketing hamster wheel, stop and ask yourself:

Do I have a marketing problem?

OR

Do I have a messaging and positioning problem?

Because if you don’t truly believe in the clarity and power of your own offer (or if you’re like Pam was, you don’t even have an offer), no marketing strategy in the world will make up for that.

What Would Happen If You Had Complete Clarity?

Imagine this…

  • Knowing exactly what to say when someone asks, “So, what do you do?”

  • Feeling confident as hell when talking about your business

  • Having people reach out to work with you—instead of chasing clients

  • No more feast-and-famine months—because your business finally feels predictable and in control

This is what happens when you stop focusing on doing more marketing and start focusing on becoming the go-to expert in your space.

In love and growth,
