🏔️ Solo CEO skillset: How a $10k/month consultant builds a lean tech stack
(Avoiding the trap of tech overload and picking the tools that serve YOU)
Let’s talk about tech today!
As an online business owner, I’m 100% sure you must be getting BOMBARDED with TONS of tools, software apps, AI products, and tech recommendations.
With a MILLION choices, every single one claiming that it’s THE TOOL that’ll completely transform your business, how you do you choose?
And more importantly– how do you strategically integrate these tools into your business? How do you avoid the trap of subscribing to 50 tools and using none?
Today, I’m going decode it all for you!
By the end of this newsletter, you’ll have a clear strategic approach to building your tech stack. You’ll say NO to shiny objects and pick the RIGHT tools that ignite your business.
Ready? Let’s go!
After 10+ years in business, and trying out 100s of tools, I’ve learned 3 critical lessons:
Lesson 1: When integrating tech, you might mistake “activity” for “progress”
You sign up for a tool– maybe it's for writing lead generating content, setting up the perfect CRM, or the newest AI tool that automates everything. You spend HOURS setting it up, watching tutorials, and getting it "just right."
But what often goes under the radar is– these tools are **often procrastination disguised as productivity.
I've worked with multiple tech founders who are really afraid of sales calls. So they spend an ungodly amount of time designing these really complicated lead gen and nurture systems.
It DOES NOT help.
The bottleneck of your business usually requires you to get into the uncomfortable zone and do the tasks that move the lever– sending out those DMs, following up, and getting on the sales calls.
Doing anything BUT that harms you (and your business).
Lesson 2: Your tools are ONLY as good as the SYSTEMS behind them
This is fundamental.
You need a prospecting system, offer creation system, lead gen system, nurture system, and sales system to build any business.
The FACT is– if you HAVE these systems in place, your business WILL work even with the bare minimum tech tools. No fancy tech required.
And on the flip side– No matter how sophisticated the tools you use, if you don't understand the core SYSTEM, it won't work.
I see this especially with tech-savvy consultants.
They look for a technical solution to something, hoping there's going to be a tech answer, when what they need is to design the process first.
If you don't have a process, you don't need tech yet. You need to do something lean and manual, test it out, and figure out what steps need to be in the process.
Lesson 3: Tech amplifies what’s NOT working
Before you even think about tech, ask yourself:
Who's my ideal prospect?
What's my positioning?
What's my offer?
How do you package and present your offer?
This is the fire that runs your business.
If you're posting on LinkedIn and getting zero interest and no one's responding to your messages, it's not a tech problem. It's a foundations problem!
Automations amplify what's already working. But they also amplify what’s NOT working.
You must light the fire first, before you think about pouring gasoline.
A Solo CEO’s problem-first approach to building a tech-stack
What’s the problem-first approach?
Here's the reframe– Ineffective tech starts solution-first.
You first say, "YES I want to implement this solution"
Then think, "Okay so what's the problem I'm solving?"
This thinking has just accelerated post the AI boom. But that's the wrong approach. You'll end up with tons of tools and hardly any real use cases.
Instead, we want to think problems-first. Ask yourself–
What's the current bottleneck I'm facing?
What are the most pressing problems I need to solve?
Get extremely clear on this.
This is your job as the CEO. Focus on solving the problems. If tech helps you solve the problem, GREAT. Go for it! But the problem always remains at the center.

2 levels to building a tech stack as a consultant:
Here are the 2 levels of tech implementation:
Level 1 (Zero to One tech stack) – This phase is about crystallizing and testing your offer, sending DMs, getting on calls, and validating your service with your first few clients.
In this phase, you need a MINIMUM VIABLE tech stack. Most tools are distractions. Just focus on revenue-generating activities. Default is NO. If you see a clear problem, think "How do I solve this with the simplest approach possible?"
Level 2 (The $10k tech stack) – Once you have service-market fit, now you want to scale to $10k/month. You know the core functions of your business. You CAN do all activities manually– there's nothing NEW.
Now think: How do I make processes more efficient? How do I get more for every minute I invest working ON the business? Even in this phase, the default is NO. You are disciplined in identifying your bottlenecks and using only the tech that serves you.
With this in mind, let’s make the approach more concrete!
3 skills Solo CEOs build to identify, implement, and leverage tech tools effectively:
Skill 1 → Problem identification
Zoom out to get clarity over your business.
What's the biggest obstacle holding you back?
What is the most important problem to solve?
The more clarity you have over this, the more confidently you'll be able to move forward in business. If you feel uncertain, no worry– you just haven't zoomed out yet.
Make these audits a regular part of business. This “problem” thinking will come to your naturally!
Skill 2 → Solution design
Once you've identified the problem, think:
"Do I need to learn something new?"
"Do I need to do something better?"
"Do I need to do something faster?"
Create a hypothesis for how you'll solve the problem. It might require you to learn, or it might require you to build leverage. All you want is clarity on the solution.
Skill 3 → Leveraging Tech
Now finally, if the problem requires you to build leverage in the process, then it's time to search for the right tool that'll fit your solution.
By this point, you have so much clarity that it'll take you an instant to find the right tool and clearly visualize where it'll fit into your business.
Whenever the time’s right, go through these and find the tool that best suits your problem!
That’s it!
No more tech overwhelm. No more subscription regret. Just a lean, powerful tech stack that grows WITH your business.
Can't wait to see you build like a true Solo CEO!
With love and growth,
Kasey
