From Outsider to CEO: How Consultants Can Build a Business Around Their Unique Genius

Being "too much" is your secret weapon (not your weakness)

You can have deep friendships and still feel like you don’t belong.

And for a lot of my clients, that’s been their reality for as long as they can remember.

This week, I had the rare opportunity for dinner and drinks with a Solo CEO client who happens to live about a mile from my house in Portland.

It was pretty freaking awesome to drink old fashioneds, eat huge juicy burgers (mine with a gluten-free bun, obvy) and just talk about life.

As we gabbed (probably later than either of us should have), I was struck by one big realization.

Both of us were largely defined by this feeling that we didn’t quite belong.

That we were a little weird. A little odd. A little outside the norm. And it reminded me that that’s who I work with.

Those beautiful, delightful, heartfelt little weirdos are MY people. And they are my ideal clients, too.
